about

On 9th November 1917, the payroll for the Runanga mines was being transported by car to pay the miners, $4000 (pounds) in cash. Driving the car that day was John Coulthard, a 26 yr old blacksmith who had volunteered to drive. He was the only son of his family, with seven sisters.
On the drive to the mines they encountered some obstruction on the road, John pulled over and left the cab to remove the debris.
He was shot and killed by John Eggers, who was hidden in a nearby bush. Eggers also shot the other two occupants of the car (both lived) and stole the money. He was later apprehended, tried and sentenced to die. He was the last person hung in the South Island.
This song is about John Coulthard.

lyrics

Tell me my sins so I might understand
Why my life’s decided by another man’s hand
Cause I’m just a boy who’s along for the ride
Shot down by an outlaw and then left to die

Tell me your secrets
Whisper your fears
You won’t have to worry
I’ll pick up the phone
I’ll turn out the lights
I’ll never make you say

All of my life I have done what I could
Worked as a black smith & got up to no good
Now that is gone & my life won’t go on
The wife and the child that I’ll never know

Tell me your secrets
Whisper your fears
You won’t have to worry
I’ll pick up the phone
I’ll turn out the lights
I’ll never make you say

Tell me your secrets
Whisper your fears
You won’t have to worry
I’ll pick up the phone
I’ll turn out the lights
I’ll lock every door
I’ll tell you no lies
I’ll be there for you
When you get home at night
& I’ll never
Make you say
Goodbye
