about

After I had decided to write an album about Aotearoa NZ, my first task was to figure out how? What do I even write about? My solution was "Just drive around and see what inspires you". So I set out with my car, a gas cooker and a sleeping bag. First Te ika a Māui/North Island, then Te waka a Māui/South Island. I set out with 100% certainty that inspiration would do it's magic and I would be writing pretty much from day one. Unfortunately nothing happened. I worked my way up the East Coast, having some fun experiences but not writing anything. I decided to cut across the country to Taranaki and visit my father at our pa in Pariroa. My Dad used to love listening to me play the guitar and perform, I remember one of my friends asking him once "do you play music?", he replied, "I do, but not like my son...". Whenever I'm passing through South Taranaki I call in to visit him and play him a few songs. So that was the scenario when I called in to visit him about 5 days into my trip; no songs, no inspiration, and more than a little worried! I sat and started playing and this song just came out, pretty much fully formed. This song carries some mystical type of power, it touches on death, perseverance, being kind to yourself when the odds feel stacked against you. I don't really know what it's about but I don't try to understand it either. It was the first song I wrote for this album but really it was a gift.
My thanks to The Polly Johnson Set, who all contributed to this song. Scott wrote a beautiful mandolin part while Ty, G & Pol all added BV's. & if you listen closely at the end of the track you'll hear Pol & Alex's baby make a guest appearance. Kind of closing out the record that my father started back on the first track. Full circle kind of thing.

lyrics

Oh my sweet darling
Go back to sleep
Your wounds are all safe like
The secrets that you keep
No more the voices inside your head
The whole house is quiet now
Go back to bed

So baby it’s ok
When it feels like the end is just too great
& your heart it keeps breaking
It's ok to feel that everything is alright now

Now grace, strength and pride
Have flown like the hawk
Your mind like a spring tide
A great river song
O' for the touch of
Your vanished hand
Or for the sound of
Your voice that is still

So baby it’s ok
When it feels like the end is just too great
& your heart it keeps breaking
It's ok to feel that everything is alright now

Instrumental

So baby it’s ok
When it feels like the end is just too great
& your heart it keeps breaking
It's ok to feel that everything is alright now
& honey it’s too late
When your heart is an ocean of
Tears break
On a mountain that crumbles
It’s ok to feel
That everything is alright now
