about

"Marty, why don't you write a song about Bluff?"

In 2016 I was between jobs and driving a group of exchange students around Te Wai Pounamu/the South Island. We had reached the bottom of the island and as we left Bluff to head up the East Coast one of the girls in the back asked me that question;
"Why would I write a song about Bluff?" I replied, looking at her in the rearview mirror
"It's a metaphor" she said, "For the end of friendship"
"Go on..." I said
"Y'know when you've known someone since forever? So you think you have to be their friend? But if you met them today you definitely wouldn't be their friend?"
"Ha, yes I know exactly what you mean"
"So why don't you write a song about Bluff, but as a metaphor for the end of friendship?" She said
"Ok", I said "I will".

lyrics

I’ve been walking in a straight line
& I walked right into you
& I don’t know how it happened
& I don’t know what to do
You know I really used to think that
But I wanted to be sure
But now I can’t tell the difference between the trouble and the cure

I been walking round in circles
Yeah you spin me round and round
& the only thing I can see
Is the trouble that I found
Y'know I want it to be different
Y'know I want it to be more
But the only thing I can see
Is that you're coming back for more

Your aneurysm gives you ignorism
